Board Philosophy (Vision Statement)

The West Foundation supports the West of the Lake Gardens and awards grants to the arts and to humanitarian, cultural, or civic organizations centered in the Lakeshore area.

Grantmaking Policies

  • Only organizations that are currently classified as tax exempt from Federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code with a valid IRS Tax ID for a minimum of two years may apply for grants.
  • The  Foundation does not make multi-year commitments.
  • In the event of a challenge grant , the grant will be for a one year period, after which the grant shall become void.
  • The Foundation should not be considered a source of ongoing support, nor should organizations expect support for operations.
  • The Foundation exists for the benefit of organizations centered in the Lakeshore area.
  • No grants shall be given to individuals, political, church or religious groups, K-12 school systems, fraternal, social or veteran organizations.

In order to be considered, the request must be complete, including:

  • The application.
  • Complete budget for the request with a description of you plans for sustaining the project in the future.
  • Current year-end financial reports (balance sheet and income statement: preferably audited).
  • Most recent Form 990 or 990EZ (or letter stating reason a 990 is not available).
  • A copy of your 501(c)(3) statement.
  • Current list of the board of directors (including names, addresses and occupations).

The Board meets the fourth Wednesday of each month. Grant applications must be received at the foundation's office no later than the first business day of the month to be considered at that month's board meeting.
